Routed sign is the plain-language term
A routed sign is CNC-machined to create recessed backgrounds, raised lettering, textures, shapes or layered components. HDU—high-density urethane—is a common exterior material used for this work.
People may call these carved signs, dimensional signs, wood-look signs, or HDU signs. The important choices are readability, material, depth, finish, and how the sign will be mounted.
Design for the viewing condition
A lobby visitor can study small detail. A driver sees the sign for seconds. Letter height, contrast, line count and logo complexity should match distance and speed.
The main business or community name should dominate. Addresses, taglines and phone numbers are reduced or removed when they hurt recognition.
Understand the construction choices
| Choice | What it changes | Question to ask |
|---|---|---|
| One-sided vs. two-sided | Material, paint labor and mounting | From which directions must it read? |
| Raised vs. recessed copy | Depth, shadows and paint separation | Which element should appear forward? |
| Smooth vs. textured background | Style and routing time | Will texture improve the brand at the viewing distance? |
| Flat panel vs. layered logo | Depth and component assembly | Does the logo need multiple visual levels? |
| Wall, posts or monument | Inserts, hardware and structural scope | Who is responsible for the mounting system? |
The proof is a production document
The proof should show spelling, dimensions, colors, number of sides, material, thickness, panel shape and major dimensional features. Review the proof carefully because it confirms the wording, layout, colors, dimensions, and major construction details we will build.
A low-resolution logo may require vector recreation. Very fine lines and tiny type may be simplified to become routable and paintable.
Separate manufacturing from installation
A finished sign panel does not automatically include posts, foundations, masonry, lifts, wall repair, electrical connections, permits or engineering. Those items should appear as separate included lines or clear exclusions.
For a replacement face, verify the actual opening and attachment method. Customer measurements should not be guessed from an old photograph.
Exterior durability is a system
HDU avoids wood-grain movement, but coating, joints, inserts, mounting, irrigation exposure and maintenance still affect service life. No exterior sign is maintenance-free forever.
Urban Fresh’s eligible finished HDU signs carry a five-year limited warranty for the original customer. The warranty terms exclude issues such as customer measurement or spelling errors, impact, vandalism, abnormal exposure and improper mounting.
